Hey, all you snowbound midwesterners, easterners, and campers in the Canadias (well, maybe it hasn't happened yet, but it will. We actually have some rain tonight in drought-plagued Southern California!)

Merry Christmas to all, especially those who still perceive utility and value in cars that are unencumbered by all of that warranty nonsense! Case in point: Some of you know of my rough red '66 Skylark Gran Sport (475,000 miles and still guzzling what is claiming to be premium gas).....well, I just put my '67 Impala (327 / 275HP, THM400) on the ground after 12.5 years jacked up with a rear end that didn't quite manage to grind itself into powdered steel before I caught it. Message to kids; it could be a nice sleigh, but there's no room for gifts and toys, because the trunk is full of tools hiding from the rain!

What does the above have to do with virtual pinball? Absolutely nothing. Just a different kind of rant, I guess.

Hope everyone is well and knows how to handle all of the food you'll be sent home with.

Merry Christmas and Happy Roguedom!

Gregg

Guess I have a ways to go in my 95 Escort with 161,000 miles. :Green: Or my 1982 Suzuki with 35,000 miles. (Hey, for a 125cc that's a lot!!)

Just to prove how long I've had it... (at the risk of embarrassing myself).

Pics are:
2008
1987
1992

It's like a time machine!

Hmmmmm.....Escort? What happened to the Mercedes---Never mind; I'll look it up.

---Sometime later---

Found the 'What I Got For Christmas' topic in which you displayed the Escort 2 years ago, but for some reason I was still picturing you adjusting breaker points. How many miles on the M-B when you waved goodbye?

The Mercedes I bought in 1996,  and drove it until 2008. It was a 4 cylinder ohc gas which was rare, but not valuable. :Censored: But what I did to it over the years..... Well, the stock 0-60 time (100 kilometers 62.5 mph) was 14.6 seconds. I had it down to high 8's/low 9's. Mind you this is for a 3200 lb car rated at 100 hp (138 cubic inches). The trans limited it to 96 mph redline, but I had it to 1oo mph a few times to say I did it. :Green: (Not the fastest I've been in a car though by a longshot) I replaced the stock Stromberg sidedraft carb with a 2 bbl Weber, and drilled out the jets to boot. The stock Dwell was 50 degrees, but it ran best at 46. I'd also adjusted the timing to where it would just start to knock lightly under full load. 18-19 degrees btdc. I made a turn one time and got rubber all the way through 3rd. That was the end of that tire...

I tried to do rust repair in the trunk area. What lives under the trunk? The gas tank. So I installed a junkyard tank in the back seat since it was my only car at the time. You can imagine the looks I got opening the back door to put gas in from the "fill the boot firefighters" on the corner..... But I had the tank sealed and strapped down properly. You couldn't smell it at all. Shit, I even had the gas gauge working!

Do you like my carb pre-heat mod?

The Escort I bought for my wife 1 year old in 1996 with 12,000 miles. At the time I had 5 vehicles for 2 people. I bought 1 year old to save the depreciation.

We had:

1972 Mercedes 170,000 miles
2000 Buick Century
1995 Ford Escort
1992 Dodge Dakota pickup 200,000 miles
1982 Suzuki

I forgot to mention. The reason I got rid of the Mercedes was I had a black no.4 cylinder. No matter what I did that plug fouled out. It wasn't that way before the engine rebuild. It was carbon, not oil- so it had to be fuel. The motor was slightly tiled back, but we couldn't find any evidence of fuel running down causing this. No play in the distributor. Leakdown and compression were BETTER than the other 3 cylinders. Even the rebuilder was puzzled. I drove it like that for a couple years (it would foul out a plug within a month, even with a hotter plug) as I worked close to home at the time. Then it sat around, and I got rid of it.

It's a bit too late now, but was the trans automatic? I wonder if the vacuum modulator tube plugged into the fourth runner on the intake (if the mod was leaking, of course). In '75, my wife and I picked up a '66 XKE 2+2 that would foul all six within a couple of months due to worn valve guides and the cam followers always being under oil. i had to clean or change plugs quite often and was looking forward to the rebuild, but wifey tired of the car rapidly (no power steering, for one thing) and it was let go.

I remember those Mercedes pictures, but not the topic/s in which you posted them. Now they're in My Pictures

One and a half shopping days remain..... :Hi:

It was automatic, and you are correct. The modulator did plug into the 4th runner on the intake manifold.

Not at that time, but later, that modulator did start to go bad. To fix that problem I blocked the vacuum line altogether with no effect. Probably too many burnouts... :Green:

Hah! Burnouts aren't something I spent time doing, being in the habit of making tires last and losing count of how many years it's been since the oil companies sold anything with sufficient octane to keep my piston tops from melting if I wanted to get squirrely.....

A half-day left for procrastinators such as myself, and then a drive of 53 miles southeast Friday to leech some food from the relatives.....you and Rukia have a good holiday, y'hear?

Gregg

Edit / P.S: By the way, doesn't the Peanuts version of 'The Night Before Christmas' close with the line, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a GOOD GRIEF!"?

Later
