Some of this years art
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:18:55 AM »
I've always done different types of art as a side hobby, though this year I've done more than I ever have. Here's a few of my favorites:

This is a stain glass window I made for the front window at my work:

I drew this, scanned it into the PC, and laser engraved it into some birch that I stained black. Then I stained the engraved area with a maple stain. I gave it to my Dad on his birthday.

Hey, Shooby Doo,

That's pretty cool stuff!  :)

That first one is obviously a sketch. I used to draw like that in my Pen 'n' Ink days.

What about that 2nd one? Is that digital? Or is that because it was printed, like in a publication? Looks like reflex blue (or maybe PMS 280 blue).

And stained glass? That's very nice! There used to be a place called "The Square Upstairs" in a really old building in Northampton, MA, just above Fitzwilly's; people had shops that had all kinds of "different" stuff, from pottery to string jewelry to Chinese Calligraphy to a "performing arts" store (clown costumes 'n' other strange stuff) and even a magician, who was my dad. Well, one of the shops there was also a stained glass shop. That's some very nice art, that is! They made everything from windows to signs and many other colorful things, all with stained glass. That "ABC Awards" must really look nice when it's lit up with sunlight or other light source.

Do you have any other artwork? Any pinball artwork? I'd love to see more ...  ;D

My late dad used to dabble in stained Glass
buying the kits that the old Leather company Tandy used to sell!
He made some wicked stained glass hanging lamps
including one that my mom still has hanging over her kitchen table!
he also made a chess set with hand poured plastic figurines over a
(lit from underneath by fluorescent lights) stained glass play field
that my sister has now I think
I am never wrong Once I thought I was
 but I was merely mistaken

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments.  :)

That first one is obviously a sketch. I used to draw like that in my Pen 'n' Ink days.

It's a sketch as well. I switched to a pen with a wide roller-ball and it lets me get it really dark without it seeping through the paper. I started using those a few months ago and it changed the way I draw. I plan on finishing up some sketches until the end of the year and then I'm going to try either charcoal or water colors. My main goal was to bring out more creativity and art skill over the course of a year - I start with a sheet of paper and a basic idea (or no idea), and don't finish until the page is filled, then immediately start a new one. I do my best to not think about it or plan it, just do it. No pre-sketching or pencils, just straight to pen.

The stained glass started as an experiment. I work at an awards shop and do laser engraving. I had some glass doors from an old stereo cabinet and thought I could engrave/etch them and make a backlit sign. But the more I thought about it, I kept getting new ideas - I ended up painting the back side of the glass black, then engraved through the paint so the glass itself showed. Then I painted it with some enamel glass paint. So it's not really cut & stained glass, but it looks like it. I built a backbox for it and put some light behind it and it looks pretty good in the store window.

The only pinball-type art I've ever done was the Bad Brains mod table I did a few months back. When I get some time I really want to get more into pinball art.

I can do vector art, I have the skills, but I just haven't spent much time with it. This is really the only actual "art" I did in vector using Inkscape. It was pretty much a challenge for me to see what I was capable of. I drew it from a photo of a buddha statue I own. All the vector stuff I do is for engraving at work, like engraving company logos on plaques.

Here's a lot of the sketches I've done since January this year:

Cool stuff! My brother draws, well too. But we don't see each other very often.
