To Boldly Go......
« on: May 11, 2013, 08:52:02 PM »
For years Rukia has been telling me to "join the 21st century". I finally bought a computer (late 2008). It took a year to teach myself windows, then another year to learn vb and vp. Shortly after that I knew more the she did. Since my first computer, I had 3 others- each I thought was so fast...(lmao). Now, all of them combined pale in comparison to the desktop I BUILT. Then a laptop went down- I built a new one from parts- it still works! Now I even have a smartphone, to go next to my rotary... All I can say is-DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU STARTED? :smiley-e_bay:

Once upon a time, it was cable tv, cassette tapes, FM Radio. Some ol' timers might even remember 8-track tapes, b/w tv with the snowy reception, AM transistor radios, and the like.

Cain't even remember times before the internet, Facebook, cell phones and laptops.

But LO! People are saying the PC and the internet are DEAD! Soon it will ALL be tablets and apps!

I cain't keep UP with it all ...

that leaves me in the dust then! I still own a 'dumbphone'
that is no internet access at all, no texting, no camera on it,
no apps at all for it as it is an older flip up LG phone
I own no tablets, pads or pods
but then again my phone bill is less than $50/month!
and I remember not only 8 tracks but also the 'newfangled' quadrophonic sound systems
that came out in the 70's and went away quietly once surround sound was invented
heck I even recall 78's with the old handheld phonographs that opened like a set of french doors
 to reveal the MONO speaker
ah the good ol' days (300 baud modems, dialup, BBS's)
I am never wrong Once I thought I was
 but I was merely mistaken

Hmm, FM Radio- Check! (I still listen to am radio!)
B/W TV - Check
8 Tracks -Check
Cassette Tapes - Check
VHS Tapes -Check (never had beta)
Quadrophonic sound - Check (Had it in my apartment in the late 80's).

This'll be only the second phone I have ever owned.

See, about that internet thing.... the reason I took so long to learn computers is because I thought they were taking over our lives, and we wouldn't be able to do anything for ourselves. Good thing I was wrong about that........

they HAVE taken over our lives
case in point, last week while shopping
the cashiers registers all crashed at the same time
the cashier couldn't subtract my purchases from the amount handed to her
I had to show her how to add and subtract without using electronics at all!
goes to show ya' that our kids are dumbing down!
really I bought about twenty bucks of food and my change was coinage not even bills!
and then I stayed to help the next lady with her purchases since she had a cart full!
all of us on line added up our expenses by hand  to help speed up the lane
the cashier was ecstatic that we all knew math enough to figure out our change
duh...really? is this what we have gotten to if the registers stop we are lost?
God forbid this poor sales girl if she actually has to read a book at any given time in the future
or do math by using (gasp! paper and pencil!)
I feel for the future if these kids are so into electronics that they are forgetting the basics
long live paperbacks!! and adding by hand and reading without an electronic device!
I am never wrong Once I thought I was
 but I was merely mistaken

I wasn't the only one telling you to get with the program, so was your friends and your family.  For crying out loud. your mother had a computer at the time!  And she doesn't understand anything!  And it was about time you did too!
