Deadly ... But Addictive In The Extreme
« on: July 05, 2014, 06:14:13 AM »
I can totally see the appeal of Storm Chasing, and if I had the resources and the opportunity, I'd probably be out there shooting videos like this! But unfortunately, at 3:12 - 3:40, it's shown here in very graphic detail why these events are totally undesirable and may they never happen to you! Still ... for some insane reason, these deadly things are completely AWESOME!

Yes that is a thrill to say the least ...

I used to live in the Midwest Just northwest of Des Moines, Iowa. I had a girlfriend that was all into storm chasing so naturally I was hooked ... this was back in the early 90's when there was not a lot of high tech equipment that was available to the general public at a reasonable price ... there was a group of us that would go out if the storms were close to see what we could capture. Needless to say that after our second close call that destroyed one car ($5800 in damage that I fixed in my shop) it scared some of us into not doing it anymore.
It was a F3 that we had been chasing and it was going away from us but suddenly started coming right back after us. We were able to take cover under a bridge overpass and we watched our 3 chase cars get blown into the ditch. One of the cars was a lighter 4WD Toyota PU and when it went into the ditch the wind got under it and lifted it up by the box and basically tossed it into the farmers corn field about 100' away.

*-PHEW!-* That was a bit too close!  :Ohh:

I'm here in CT ... so it doesn't happen very often ... but every now and then, the lightning does get close ... too close! You can hear a sound, a momentary buzz like an electrical generator, just before you hear the boom. But the boom is LOUD!! The kind you feel in your chest! And you can feel the static charge from that thing ... um, okay ... I think I'm gonna go inside now!
