Title: Am I nuts?
Post by: Itchigo on February 17, 2016, 03:17:13 PM
I've been lamenting about getting rid of my 95 Escort. Mechanically it's fine, but spots on the frame (rust) are not fixable. Minus the rust problems I'd get another 5 years or more out of it. Everything works, right down to each line on the rear window defroster. Well today I closed on a deal for...... (drum roll please), another 95 Escort! I have to pay to have it shipped to my state, but I think I did well on it, though I took a huge chance. It looks great to me, and I'm told the previous owner did some work prior to this dealer getting it (alternator, battery). It only has 84,000 miles! My old one has 163,000 on it. This is the first time I've ever bought a car without being practically UNDER it before I bought it. (I did that one time and the salesman laughed a bit). So without further ado...

Agreed, you are nuts. Maybe... if you really really really like that particular car and got this one for 1k or under... Maybe...

You know what? I bought the old one for my wife 20 years ago. It's been an excellent car, with very little repairs over the years. Parts are cheap, and since I do most of my own work- I know the car. It's easy to work on too. This is the first time I've ever bought a car I couldn't be there in person to check out though... From what I saw, this dealer only works with cars 10 years and older, fixes them up a bit, and resells them. Bluebook is $2500 retail, $2100 or so private party- excellent condition. It was listed on the dealer's site for $2495. Ebay listed it as starting at $1001. I offered $1300, and it was accepted. Shipping will be $554, making the entire car be $1854. I'd pay $1854 if the car were here. Not much more, but this looks almost untouched.

You listed things that you liked about the car and that you see benefits for getting another one. Cars are only worth what someone would pay for it.  Although I may not like it (matters of taste only) doesn't mean that your not getting a good deal for what you expect from it.  I've seen junk cars go for a lot more, your description sounds like a solid car. Enjoy!

I agree with Mikes last statement. I also still think you are nuts :) but that OK.

Still some work to do but when all is said and done I'll have 2600 or so into it. 2600 buys a car that still needs work. :Content:

Looks cool. I like the license plate frame on the back.  You might find some rubbing compound and polishing compound will do a good job on many of those scratches.

Looking good, Itch!  :Green: Happiness is having a new car (used). You might have had to do a bit of work, but now you can expect to rely on it for another 80k miles.

That engine sounds really great for its age! Purrrrrrrrrrrrrr ... I know some other much newer cars that don't purrrrr like that!

Smooth sailing to you! Way to go!

Just an update on this- it feels like a new car! 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway. A/C like a deep freeze (like the old one). All the mechanical work is done, paint next year! HUGE difference at speed. The old one felt unstable at about 90. This felt like a heavy old car at this speed! That's not even top end either... The governor kicked on and that's the pre-set limit. But look at how many rpms I had left. If I disable the governor, redline is at about 134-137.
